link repair: ACL injury
I've repaired the link to ACL injury in my post regarding Allison Feaster's return to the game (not from ACL tear, thankfully.)

WNBA July 28th, 29th and 30th indications recast
July 28th Scores
Sacramento at Connecticut: indications on: unfortunately, there are only too few games when the team that plays with the most skill (rather than force) is rewarded for doing so. This, however, was one: Sac had 23 personal fouls to Conn only 11; Sac made only 7 free throws to Conn's 17. If you have the misfortune to open the WNBA's official boxscore page, you'll see the statistical graphics pretty much even in all other categories.
Phoenix at San Antonio: indications off. I reserve comment momentarily.
Minnesota at Chicago: indications off: Minn had big problems: Minn lost.
Detroit at Seattle: indications on: the webcast announcers made much ado of the injury situation of Seattle in their valiant but losing effort; let's leave it at that for the moment.
July 29th Scores
New York at Charlotte: indications off: Charlotte, not Charlotte.
Washington at Indiana: indications on, with great defense by Washington (Indiana, ha, clinched a playoff berth anyway, haha.)
July 30th Scores
San Antonio at Connecticut: indications on: but though SA lost, they matched the intensity of their opponent. What would happen if they dug down past their antics?
Minnesota at New York: indications off: NY is beginning to see that overemphasis on one player can stifle a team's real potential; Minn is moving toward the same mistake.
Houston at Phoenix: indication off.
Los Angeles at Seattle: indications on: LA clinched the regular season Western conference title: that's a mark of a contender.
Indiana at Chicago: indications on.
Charlotte at Washington: indications off: Charlotte, still not Charlotte; bricked 9 free throws in a game to allow them to remain in playoff contention.
Detroit at Sacramento: indication off.
Mud pie in 'de hommie's face
Indiana has clinched. Shut my mouth (Indiana, ha.)
Allison's comeback info (on the real side)
Last night's webcast announcer for MSG's coverage of NY at Charlotte said that he spoke to Allison Feaster before the game. She told him that she didn't realize how critical her back and leg muscles were to her shot until trying to return to form from her prenancy. I can see this. Makes sense to me. In fact, Allison is probably also facing a social fear of "disconnectedness" associated therewith that has to be explicitly encountered and dealt with. But is anyone out there making note of this; maybe even a physician whose own birth certificate reads "female", "baby girl", or something. I'm thinking, probably like someone's out there taking note of the incidence of ACL injury in women's basketball. Hey, this is the beginning of a new relationship.
And about that game last night, women do not win (and no other cause wins) when the public's intelligence is insulted.
On the other hand, everyone gains when society increases its understanding of phenomenon that affects even only a segment of the society in general.
Food for thought.
And in the world of figure skating
It is disquietingly (Roget's 4th) quiet in the figure skating world. I guess that's a good thing, though, because for a while you couldn't turn on the TV without a "Hommies vs Themselves Ice Competition". But look at this: Sasha Cohen is contemplating not competing next year, because she has made a movie. Story.
Sherone of Jamaica kicks buck again!
ABC News story (hey, I couldn't have said it better!) And do you see that part where it says Allyson Felix came in sixth? O0000000000.

WNBA July 28th, 29th and 30th indications
Sacramento at Connecticut: I'm going with the home team in this rematch of last week. webcast scheduled
Phoenix at San Antonio: Phoenix, in this character building season for them.
Minnesota at Chicago: Minn shouldn't have a problem, which may spell trouble for Minn before the season ends: maintaining discipline. webcast scheduled
Detroit at Seattle: a great battle, and I give the edge to Detroit, as they test Ann Donovan's Juggernaut's limits.
July 29th
New York at Charlotte: Charlotte, still Charlotte. webcast scheduled
Washington at Indiana: Washington (Indiana, ha.)
July 30th
San Antonio at Connecticut: Conn, no can do SA. webcast scheduled
Minnesota at New York: Minn, if they can draw on inner discipline. webcast scheduled
Houston at Phoenix: Phoenix, payback. webcast scheduled
Los Angeles at Seattle: LA, are you a contender or pretender?
Indiana at Chicago: Indiana, maybe this one. webcast scheduled
Charlotte at Washington: Charlotte, still Charlotte (and Allison Feaster is going to hit . . . one this time.) webcast scheduled
Detroit at Sacramento: Detroit, a contender, a real contender.
WNBA July 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th indications recast
July 24th scores
Connecticut at New York: indications on: Conn.
July 25th scores
Sacramento at Indiana: Indications off: Indiana maintained. No Sac starter ended the game in double figures. Tamika Whitmore is having an outstanding season for Indiana.
Los Angeles at Houston: indications on: well, hommies can take consolation that it would'a and could'a had not Tina Thompson been injured. Season isn't over.
Minnesota at Charlotte: indications off: Minn played a great defensive game.
Seattle at Phoenix: indications off: oops, Ann Donovan's Juggernaut maintained one more game.
New York at Chicago: indications off: unbelievably NY. Christen 13 points, Kraayeveld 22 points, Barb Farris 10 points, Sherill Baker 6 points, Lorrie Moore 14 points. Doesn't sound like the All-Star game, but it got the job done. Public please do notice: Stacey Dales has recently been putting her game where her mouth is for Chicago this season.
Washington at Connecticut: indications on: Conn is getting hip to 'dis he'a game.
July 26th scores
Sacramento at Detroit: indications on: important WNBA, Detroit is giving notice that 2005 is behind, and the 2006 championships is close at hand. Forewarned is getting ready for this.
Los Angeles at San Antonio: indications on: SA is really missing Chantelle Anderson whose recovery we pray is swift and complete.
Phoenix at Houston: indications off: Diana had 41 points (and I'm not trying to be (too) funny), but she really needed to make that last one that would have won the game on what could have been the very last possession of the game. Had you been there you'd have loved Phoenix' tenacity.
Chicago at Washington: indications on, unfortunately, because Chi is now mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. I cry no tears: Chicago will have its winner. Soon. And this season is not over.
Charlotte at Minnesota: indications off: I expected the two teams to maintain against each other at home, but they did it on the road. Love that Charlotte. And Minn.

Marion Jones nosed out in Rome, Rematch Friday in London
Marion Jones was edged in the 100 meters at the Golden Gala in Rome July 14th by Sherone Simpson, a largely unknown Jamaican (Sherone's story). USA Today: Marion Jones improves 100-meter time, but loses race Rematch Friday, July 29th, in London. (Story)
Below, Susanna Kallur of Sweden (the same Susanna Kallur of Illini?) takes the 100 meter hurdles at the IAAF Golden League Golden Gala.

WNBA weekend seen July 23rd
seen this weekend: Jessica Moore and Murriel Page: Not two minutes into the game at Indiana, 6'5 Lisa Leslie fouled 5'7 Tully Bevilaqua as Tully attempted a layup. It was a hard foul, the ball was no consideration in Lisa's mind. Silly foul, yes. Christi Thomas offers LA a seamless post presence in Lisa's foul propensity, but Christi is still injured. With 10 seconds left in the 2nd quarter and Indiana leading by only 2 points, even I knew Indiana was going to drive to the basket to increase the score and attempt to give Lisa the third foul she deserved for her silliness. Jessica Moore kept her eye on the action, and stepped between Lisa and the action and gave the foul. Jessica did that for the rest of the night, using brain and brawn. Murriel and her points all came at critical junctures in the game, as the pair played clutch but fundamental basketball as team players to keep their team in the game and gain the win. There is no higher possible commendation in the game.
WNBA July 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th indications
July 24th
Connecticut at New York: Conn. webcast scheduled
July 25th
Sacramento at Indiana: Sac, let's see if there's anything to the reigning champ's current run.
Los Angeles at Houston: LA, mud pie in Hou's face as LA sweeps the regular season series.
Minnesota at Charlotte: Charlotte's looking good . . . of late.
Seattle at Phoenix: Phoenix, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.
New York at Chicago: Chi: I've searched for news that Becky Hammon is going to play, but word is she's still in her cast. webcast scheduled
Washington at Connecticut: Conn is getting hip to this hea' game.
July 26th
Sacramento at Detroit: Detroit as Sac is not in repeat form yet. webcast scheduled
Los Angeles at San Antonio: LA over the anties.
July 27th

WNBA July 21st, 22nd and 23rd indications recast
WNBA Schedule (and Scores) page (no statistical graphics)
July 21st Scores (page includes boxscores)
Los Angeles at Detroit: indications on, as LA took a schlacking from a team that the (sports) world sees as blind to itself and its strengths. Lisa got a double double, but not the 30 - 40 points no one really expected against Detroit: that was the point.
Washington at San Antonio: indications on: Washington.
July 22nd Scores
Phoenix at Charlotte: indications on: the important thing is for Charlotte to continue to pull it together and to close out the wins, letting nothing slow this.
Seattle at New York: indications on: the Juggernaut's -no, it's not "the Juggernaut's"- Ann Donovan's Juggernaut's back is against the wall.
Los Angeles at Indiana: indications on: why spoil the season with much analysis.
Sacramento at Minnesota: indications off: and now there's no more Coach Suzy at Minn. Interesting: a female coach exits.
Chicago at Detroit: indications on: welcome to the WNBA for real, Chi!
Connecticut at San Antonio: indications on: SA could not get up to Conn.
July 23rd Scores
Seattle at Washington: indications on: Ann Donovan's Juggernaut's back is against the wall, and Washington did not heed my warning.
Who is? She is, of course, . . .
Serena is back; Venus is gone; Myskina is a figment of man's imagination
So harried by all the missed layups hitting everything on the court but net (and it wasn't just Tamika, her former Huskie teammate Svetlana Abrosimova missed her share), I missed women's sports on the real side: Serena returning to the court Tuesday for the first time in six months, apparently recovered from a left knee injury. She opened her play at the Cincinnati Open with a stunning victory over Anastasia Myskina (pictured left) 6-2 6-2. In the second round it was 6-3 6-1 over USA's Bethanie Mattek (pictured below).
In the quarters, Serena defeated Amy Frazier 6-2 6-2. Last night, she was halted in the semis by Vera Zvonareva 6-2 6-3. That's to be expected: she has been off the tour for six months, and nothing is more clearly established than that there is just no substitute for the rigor of the tour than actually playing in tour events.
Venus was in town (may still be at this 4:00 am writing), featured with the Philadelphia Freedoms in World Team Tennis (WTT) action against the Houston Wranglers. The Wranglers carried every event except women's singles, including mixed doubles that also featured Venus. Match Results (I'm not really sure how to read and interpret the stats on the page, but because I'm an illiterate doesn't make the rest of the world the same.) I didn't attend: when I first learned of her appearance here, I was sure I'd be in San Antonio for the weekend with Washington Friday night, and Conn last night. Recently, the TV commercials for the venue pictured it as much larger than I anticipated, suggesting that I really needed to have gotten a ticket much sooner to have gotten decent pics.

And I was sure I saw Myskina coming here after Venus. WTT Schedule I've said it before, (sports) man cannot read.
Oh, well, at least Tamika and Svet's tight from UConn, Asjha Jones, didn't miss any layups in that part of the Conn v SA game I caught after the LA @ Indiana game (I am not going there; this is a posting about the never disappointing Serena.) Asiha and Tamika graduated with Swin Cash and Sue Bird. At left, Tatiana Golovin of France also defeated by Vera Zvonareva in Cincinnati.

Even Tamika Williams was missing layups last night
Even the two-time NCAA champion Tamika Williams was missing layups for Minnesota here last night: a missed layup, rebound, missed put-back (okay, some traffic). Her other miss in her 3 for 6 for the night was an eight-footer, but, again, I didn't see any whole lot of defenders around her for that shot. She is shown here with (from left) Michelle Snow, Mistie Williams (in her first WNBA start) and Dawn Staley.

WNBA July 21st, 22nd and 23rd indications
July 21st
Los Angeles at Detroit: Detroit: they will not give LA the time of day; LA, on the other hand, has played full of jive and bull all season long. Lisa Leslie's performance in this single game will be determinative of whether she will earn regular season MVP honors (which no one really wants to give to her.)
Washington at San Antonio: Washington: both teams are presently at .500 (11 wins and losses). Washington has conducted itself this season with far more decorum and professionalism than the anties could ever imagine, and these are the just the teams the anties get up far. Fortunately for us webcast scheduled.
July 22nd
Phoenix at Charlotte: Phoenix, though Charlotte has won its last four.
Seattle at New York: don't even think about it NY. I'd give away my ticket to the upcoming Seattle @ Hou game should the Juggernaut lose this one, because I would not even want to face Ann Donovan. webcast scheduled
Los Angeles at Indiana: LA (even on a back to back, Indiana, ha!) webcast scheduled
Sacramento at Minnesota: watch this, Minn.
Chicago at Detroit: don't even think about it Chi.
Connecticut at San Antonio: Conn, get up to this one anties! webcast scheduled
July 23rd
Seattle at Washington: Seattle, because they are 11 wins 12 losses for the season (one half game behind fourth place SA), and need every win now. Charlotte is 4.5 games behind Washington in the standing, so Washington has a cushion that's going to make them too comfortable in this game.

WNBA July 18th, 19th and 20th indications recast
July 18th
Phoenix at Indiana: indications off: this was a surprise, and a noteworthy win by Indiana. Box Score
Sacramento at Seattle: indications on: Sac beat the Juggernaut. Quite logical actually. Box Score
Houston at San Antonio: indications on: mud pie in Houston's face as SA sweeps the regular season series. I've seen Sheryl Swoopes singlehandedly determine Houston's post-season placement. Let's see if she stirs around SA in the first round this year ((big) if both teams make the playoffs.) Box Score
New York at Los Angeles: indications on: this was difficult: best team in the West vs the East's cellar. Box Score
July 19th
Phoenix at Washington: indications on: Phoenix. Box Score
Charlotte at Detroit: indications off: oops, Detroit. Not. Box Score
Chicago at Minnesota: indications on: Minn. Box Score
July 20th
Seattle at Charlotte: indications off: on a back-to-back for Charlotte, they topped the Juggernaut! Box Score
New York at Sacramento: indications on: NY had no chance. Box Score
Chicago at Connecticut: indications on: Chi had no chance. Box Score
Minnesota at Houston: indications off: I thought it was turnovers at crucial moments by Minn (17 with 19 points off turnovers, Hou 18 with 14 points off), abysmally poor offensive rebounding by Minn (only 6 to Hou's 27 defensive rebounds; Hou had 9 offensive rebounds to Minn 19 defensive rebounds (hey, more makes create less opportunities for rebounds in the first place)), and horrific shooting in general by Minn (put in 21 of 56 shots with Hou dropping in a signicant (and determinative) 38% more at 29 of 58.) But the recap credited it all to Houston's defense. What I saw was what Minn didn't do that was well within reasonable expectations for the much talent on that team, but if the hommies want to believe defense, so be it. Box Score Alternative Box Score

WNBA July 18th, 19th and 20th indications
July 18th
Phoenix at Indiana: Phoenix (Indiana, ha).
Sacramento at Seattle: this is fun: Sac beat Conn Sat; Conn beat the Juggernaut Sun; therefore, Sac.
Houston at San Antonio: mud pie in Houston's face as SA sweeps the season series.
New York at Los Angeles: LA, sweet revenge. Look for Chamique, Mwade or Lisa to not play: one hand tied behind the back
July 19th
Phoenix at Washington: Phoenix, momentum.
Charlotte at Detroit: oops, Detroit.
Chicago at Minnesota: oops, Minn.
July 20th
Seattle at Charlotte: no disloyalty intended, but (ahem) Seattle.
New York at Sacramento: Sac, NY has no chance. webcast scheduled
Chicago at Connecticut: Conn, Chi has no chance.
Minnesota at Houston: good game: (ahem) Minn (cough, cough ).
WNBA weekend seen July 16th
Seen this weekend: the webcast twins. With 6:50 left in the fourth quarter, Chicago took its first lead over Washington 61-60. Immediately, Coco Miller answered on the other end, and added 5 more points to the 15-5 run by Washington over the next three minutes. Coco didn't allow Chi to even get any play on the back-hand side, like "Don't even think about it!" Even as Washington was mopping up in Chicago, Kelly Miller with Phoenix was equally unsympathetic with NY, scoring 12 points with 3 assist and 4 rebounds. Above (on right) and below (at center), Kelly and Coco with the Birmingham Power facing the Houston Stealth in NWBL play in 2003. Double clicking the pics should give you the larger image.

San Antonio at Charlotte: indications off: oops, Charlotte closed with great defense (but 18 turnovers). Box Score

Connecticut at Sacramento: indications off. I'm hoping Conn gained something from this one: do not tell your opponent that they are the world champions only because one of your starters was not 100% Box Score
Indiana at Charlotte: indications on: Charlotte did close this one with field goals made to attempts at 44.3% to Indiana's 32.2%. At the close of the game, Charlotte had only 8 total turnovers. Box Score
July 16th
Los Angeles at Minnesota: indications off: LA with a total 8 turnovers to Minn's 18. Box Score
San Antonio at Detroit: indications on: SA must have watched the tape of the Houston game (and remembered last year) and defended Ruth Riley well, but just totally forgot about the other four starters. Box Score
Houston at Indiana: indications on: Houston didn't win, but Indiana won by only 4 points. I expected something more emphatic. Box Score
Washington at Chicago: indications off, despite the notable performance by Stacey Dales of the Windy City. Chicago bricked 11 free throws, yes, free throws. Box Score
New York at Phoenix: indications on: NY had no chance. Box Score
Connecticut at Seattle: indications off: so Conn was able to split the West road swing 1-1 after all. They showed confidence against the assault in the lair here in the West. Box Score

WNBA July 14th, 15th and 16th indications
July 14th
San Antonio at Charlotte: oops, San Antonio, Charlotte won't close even this one.
Los Angeles at Phoenix: Phoenix has the higher motivation.
Houston at Chicago: oops, Houston.
New York at Seattle: not in the lair NY.
July 15th
Connecticut at Sacramento: Connecticut has been far more consistent all year, and this should prevail over here and there flashes of form.
Indiana at Charlotte: Charlotte can and will close this one.
July 16th
Los Angeles at Minnesota: Minnesota, LA failed to fully capitalize on its home stint to its own harm.
San Antonio at Detroit: Detroit, again consistency over flashes of form.
Houston at Indiana: Houston cannot win this one.
Washington at Chicago: I think Chicago can bring it together for a win.
New York at Phoenix: NY has no chance.
Connecticut at Seattle: this is a tough one: were Connecticut not on a back-to-back I would say, yes, Connecticut, but, no, Seattle, because Connecticut will have played Sac the night before.

WNBA weekend seen July 9th
seen this weekend: Minnesota at home. Look at the stats: Box Score The anties' field goals 47.6%; Minnesota 45.5%. The anties 3-point field goals 41.7% but from 10 made in 24 attempts; Minn 40.0% but only 4 made in 10 attempts. The anties: Vickie Johnson 12 points, Shannon Johnson 20 points, Biba 19 points. And Minnesota still pulled out a win . . . before their home crowd this time of 5,718! Nothing short of incredible!
seen this weekend: Indiana in the lair. Again, look at the stats: Box Score For Indiana: Anna DeForge 15 points, Tully Bevilaqua 7 points, Tamika Whitmore 13 points, Tamika Catchings 20 points, Ebony Hoffman 9 points, Tan White 8 points. Absolutely nothing extraordinary: they won not by super actions but simply by persistent effort. Through this game, they were well coached. For the rest of this season, Ann Donovan should make this game the salt her team shakes on its meals, the response to every suggestion of respite, the commercial after every 15 minutes of game tape review. Not super, persistent.

WNBA weekend seen July 2nd
Seen this weekend: Nakia Sanford Nakia gave Houston fits Thursday, and the fans in LA and Phoenix heard her name called out a lot in those games also (16 points, 9 rebounds in LA Saturday, 14 points, 8 rebounds in Phoenix Sunday.) I could not believe she's been in the league, let alone at Washington, since '03. WNBA fans are seeing a lot of her and her teammate Chasity Melvin as they step up to fill the void left in Delisha Milton-Jones injury-inactivity. Good job!
Seen this weekend: Coco Miller Looking good: I've got to dig up some pics of her to post.
Seen this weekend: DeMya Walker, and we really should not have. She's not ready. Yes, Sacramento's scoring is down this year from last, but
- Sac lost Chelsea Newton and her sobriety to Chicago in the expansion draft; and,
- DeMya's absence has not been a complete one, but more an impending moment of cataclysmic proportions, which she is playing out to the hilt: dealing much uncertainty, thoughtlessness and just plain vanity to her teammates and to the team effort: are mothers more woman?

men can't read, more women than Venus
In my post "Notable First Round Wimbledon surviviors " yesterday I gave the correct reference for scores Day 4 Scores , but did not read it correctly at all. Amy Frasier did survive and is at this very moment engaged in the first set of her third round match with Maria Sharapova.
More importantly, I topped the list of deposed Americans with Shenay Perry, pictured. And not only did she survive her second round match as the referenced score card indicates, but also she has just defeated Sybille Bammer 7-5 6-3 in round three. Man, I've got to get into Wimbledon, but right now I've got to jet.

WNBA July 1st and 2nd indications
July 1st
Sacramento at Charlotte: how I'd love to say Charlotte (okay, so Charlotte is my team); alas.
Chicago at San Antonio: Chicago, the San Antonio anties can't respect themselves two days in a row.
Connecticut at Indiana: Conn (Indiana, ha).
Minnesota at Seattle: Minn, with another of those performances they've given to really make this season worthwhile.
Washington at Los Angeles: LA.
July 2nd
Sacramento at Houston: Sacramento.
Washington at Phoenix: Phoenix, Penny Taylor is back, and Washington is going to be the first victim (and Washington will have really put out the effort in LA the night before.)
WNBA June 30th indications recast
