Houston's Katy Taylor was actually fourth at US Nationals and an alternate to Turin

I could not have been more wrong regarding Katy Taylor's senior status, news that has received so much local attention. Katy came in fourth among senior ladies at the US nationals in January. That made her first alternate on Team USA to the Olympics in February during the interval before and after Michelle Kwan's team participation. You can double click the January 16, 2006, Houston Chronicle story for a larger view (you may also need to expand it using the enlarge anchor rolling over the bottom right corner of the image in the new window.) I just didn't make the connection watching the program Sunday. My bad. The news article is reproduced here for discussion purposes only by a Chronicle subscriber without the publisher's permission.

Houstonian Katy Taylor scheduled for Skate Canada this weekend

Katy Taylor, pictured, might want to redo her Skate America performances: in the short program, her combined technical/artistic score (34.66) just exceeded Kimmie Meissner's technical mark alone (31.72.) Katy finished 11th in the field of 11 women, but I believe I heard the announcers say that this was her first senior level performance. She's entitled to be nervous. Houston Chronicle: New footwear a test for Taylor

This weekend at Skate Canada she will face Japan's Yoshie Onda and Fumie Suguri and Canada's own Joannie Rochette and Mira Leung: she's got a chance.

Hopefully, ABC will include her long program among the performances broadcast Sunday at 4 PM Houston time. No Skate Canada broadcast is scheduled within the next 14 days, but it is not uncommon for ISU Grand Prix broadcasts to occur weeks after the actual performance dates.

At Skate America in the short, its Mao, Miki, then Kimmie

ABC News (with the AP story): Mao Asada Exquisite in Short Program

I hate to fill even the blogsphere with my confusion, but the TV schedule for Skate America seems to have the ladies' short program for 1 hour beginning noon (CDT) tomorrow on ABC, 3 hours of dance, men's and pairs free skate on ESPN at 1:00 PM also tomorrow, then something for 1 hour at noon next Sunday on ABC. No live women's free on prime time Saturday night? No women's free at all? (Yes, there are yet women in dance and pairs - temporarily.)

Clearly here the networks are the losers.

Hey, some SWAC hoops perspectives

The Huntsville Times: Lady Bulldogs expect to field stronger team

Cynthia Cooper coaches at SWAC's Prairie View A&M (just outside Houston, generally referred to as "the hill".) No few Houstonians were put off, offended and otherwise not really happy when local Texas Southern University's administrators dis'ed Coop's expression of interest in the then open coaching position on "the yard" before the position on "the hill" became available. Texas Southern is a member of SWAC (unrelated to the now defunct SWC), along with notables Southern University and Grambling State University.

Whoa, (the) Daniela Hantuchova bests Kutzy to meet Sharapova in Zurich Final

Although Hantuchova walked over to the semis on Amelie Mauresmo's injury withdrawal from the tournament, she evidenced the appropriateness of the advance with the win over Kuznetsova.

Consider: there are issues here that illuminate the larger field

BYU NewsNet: Women's Sport Finds Place at BYU. With regard to this particular singular issue, one wonders about the academic mission statement here as one of the nation's pedagogical influence leaders misses an opportunity to teach, to teach leaders and to teach winners on the larger playing field. How does BYU define "athletics" in its commitment to whatever it is committed to?

Personally me myself, all I want to know is what are the camera restrictions.

'Dats a rapp!

Sharapova: higher form in Zurich

Reuter's Siggi Bucher (through Yahoo! News) had an apparently elevated view of Russia's Maria Sharapova's 6-4 6-3 quarterfinal win over Timea Bacsinszky, who was playing before a crowd of her countrymen and countrywomen. The result is interesting, though not necessarily better from the view of the inner Sharapova (for example, check the next to last photo.)

The quarterfinal match featuring the second Swiss, the "Swiss Miss" herself, the goddess, is underway as this is being posted.
