US Open Day 5
Six third round women's singles matches were completed before Ernesto effected the Open. Kutzy will face increasingly formidable Jelena Jankovic in the next round. France's Aravane Rezai (left) defeated the subject of the fashion statement pictured below, Maria Kirilenko of Russia, 6-3 6-1. Unfortunately, I've not heard anything about these two players before. Dementieva defeated her hommie Vera Zvonareva 7-5 6-3, and will face Rezai in the next round. Ai Sugiyama went three rounds with Justine Henin-Hardenne, but it was first set 6-4 then 1-6 0-6. Not so Isreal's Shahar Peer's win over Sania Mirza's vanquisher Francesca Schiavone: first set 6-3 then 6-7 (tie breaker 2-7) 7-6 (tie breaker 7-3), talking about going the distance! Peer now faces Henin-Hardenne in the next round. Day 5 results for continued women's doubles round 1 play.
