US Open day 4
Except for those maybe returning from a space station tour or, worse, having been overly engrossed in the WNBA playoffs, we know that Serena defeated Daniela Hantuchova 1-6 6-3 6-3 in round 2 of the JP Morgan Chase tournament on August 10, 2006, defeated Meghann Shaughnessy 6-7 6-1 6-4 the next day, and lost to Jelena Jankovic in the semis as did the goddess to Elena Dementieva, the eventual event champion.
That makes the events of today very plausible, except in one stead: the goddess, the No. 8 seed, incredibly fell 2-6 4-6 to unseeded Virginie Razzano of France. More tenable day 4 results: Serena defeated (the) Daniela Hantuchova; Mauresmo was out longer than she anticipated with USA's Meghann Shaughnessy; Lindsey Davenport 6-0 6-0; USA's Lauren Albanese out to Kutzy 1-6 1-6; Vania King (pictured left) not much better 1-6 2-6 to Justine Henin-Hardenne; Sharapova on; Dementieva on; Pierce and (the) Golovin on; Anastassia Rodionova defeated Jie Zheng of China 7-5 6-3; USA's Jill Craybas put a little heat on the rising Vera Zvonareva 3-6 5-7; Eleni Daniilidou (pictured below), after winning maybe less than a dozen points in the first set, came back in the second to reverse her fortunes but fell to Na Li 0-6 6-1 4-6; Jelena Jankovic on; Patty Schnyder on; Elena Likhovtseva (seeded only 32) on; Petrova over Virginia Ruano Pascual; Ai Sugiyama defeated Tathiana Garbin of Italy in three sets; and Jamea Jackson and Sania Mirza both were defeated.
In women's doubles, Sania and her partner South Africa's Liezel Huber won handedly.
